A chirpy, cheeky, brilliantly funny new number by the Manchester band, about an annoying guy chatting up a girl at supermarket till, holding up all the other trolleys, is filled with snappy lines and catchy riffs. It captures a familiar scene as the predator bullshits his victim, and wastes everyone else’s time. Hann is fronted by Hannah Fitzpatrick, who hails from Levenshulme, with also a German connection, and co-writes with Edward Barton.
I feel sick
He’s telling her he’s in a band …
Look at him checking out the checkout girl
Checking out the checkout girl …
When I get there I’ll tell her yeah he’s in a band alright
They’ve got no band, no songs, no gigs, no songs, no fans
They’re not very tight …
She’s writing her number on the till receipt
He’s staring so hard down her front he can probably see her feet …
The song is also reminiscent though from a different perspective of another great Manchester number, The Freshies’ I'm In Love With The Girl On The Manchester Virgin Megastore Check-out Desk, fronted by Chris Sievey, who later became Frank Sidebottom. That song, a minor hit in 1980 after being recorded a few years earlier, and previously highlighted on Song of the Day, has a more youthful innocent perspective, surrounded by the romance of the record shop, the narrator/ admirer only being able to express his love from afar.
