Two beautiful songs for a Sunday from a new album, Goodnight Rhonda Lee, by the New Jersey-born singer who possesses one of the most tender, powerful and soulful voices around today. Sometimes described as a female Roy Orbison, Atkins is influenced by the 50s and 60s era and the Brill Building songwriting tradition, but clearly country comes into it a little too, with the first of these songs co-written with Chris Isaak. Listen Up meanwhile displays Atkins' self-deprecating, humorous side, which also comes to the fore if you catch her live performances (currently on tour in the UK and beyond).
