Delicious, intelligent, playful, gorgeous, witty folk with a country flavour by the honey-voiced Oregon singer-songwriter, packed with lyrically vivid images and perceptive, humorous lyrics, with fabulous finger-picking guitar, with added cello and trombone. With an EP in between, this is the second album following 2018’s I Need to Start a Garden. Heynderickx still enjoys naturalistic images, but here she mixes hummingbirds with cell phones, car keys with cats, trees and time, fanning the sights of the big city as well as twirling and frolicking among the foxgloves. In the fabulous opener Gemini, her pure singing voice intersperses with playful talk-singing about be chased by another version of herself, and of the thousands of artists one might compare to Joni Mitchell, with a her wit and musical agility, she surely right up there for worthy succession. But in her own right this has a wonderful light touch and energy, with many other standouts here, including the title track (a former Song of the Day here), Foxglove, Redwoods (Anxious God) with a particularly strong earthy rich accompaniment by the other instruments, Sorry Fahey, Jerry’s Song, and the sparse, intimate Spit In The Sink. A real gem of an album, one of the most sparkling, fresh and vital of this year. Out on Mama Bird Recording.
