Mesmeric, inventive, experimental folk by Newcastle’s Jayne Dent, who continues to mix tradition and innovation, using vocal loops, electronica and acoustic instruments to an otherworldly, surreal effect. A prime example is Eye Witness, a surreal portrayal of a fight in a nightclub, or Festive Day, with drone and fiddle about being overcome by intense sensory experiences, of nature, the elements and desire, inspired by spending a midsummer festival in Denmark. Dent sources very old songs, such as Mirie it is While Summer I Last, reworked with beautiful harmonies, while The Oldest Tree Holds The Earth is a a mythic dream song of the inner life of trees. Heat! mixes electronica, violin and birdsong, The God of Stuck Time comes with gentle droning hush of hums and further animal sounds and electronic chirping, and Side Quest is a truly oddball mix of acoustic string twangs and electronica and there is much more, all the way to closing track Science and Art, a wondrous syncopated handclaps, beats and keyboards. Utterly different, strange and alluring. Out on Upset The Rhythm.
