The veteran indie singer-songwriter from Liverpool’s latest LP is filled with strong, stirring numbers that mix the jangly sound of the English north-west with US west coast Byrds, with 12 character-based songs from ‘boulevards of fractured dreams’ inspired by F Scott Fitzgerald. Ex-Coral’s Bill Ryder-Jones adds some body on production. Head’s lyrics are variously wry, witty and melancholy, and standouts include Fluke, about a Los Angeles bus tour to the homes of stars, as well the the more Liverpool-based Broken Beauty and The Ten, and the bright, jangly opener Kismet, as well as American Kid. An enduring, straight-up songwriting talent with an up and down career, but still very much in his prime. Out on Modern Sky.
